Polish energy company Orlen and Naftogaz of Ukraine have signed a new agreement to supply an additional 100 million cubic metres (mcm) of natural gas to Ukraine.

This is the third agreement signed by the two companies under a long-term collaboration framework and contributes to ongoing efforts to enhance regional energy security.

A second contract, also for approximately 100mcm, was signed in March this year and followed a similar supply arrangement.

Announced during the 14th edition of the Orlen Gas Meeting industry event, this latest agreement brings the total US-sourced gas supplied to Ukraine under the companies’ collaboration to 300mcm.

Orlen management board operations vice-president Robert Soszyński said: “The latest agreement with Naftogaz highlights Orlen’s growing importance as a natural gas supplier in the region.

“Our partnership contributes significantly to strengthening Ukraine’s energy security through Orlen’s diversified gas supply portfolio and the efficient utilisation of Polish transmission infrastructure. We remain committed to further supporting Ukraine by ensuring access to stable and diversified gas sources.”

Orlen will import liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US and then regasify it at the Świnoujście terminal in Poland for transport to the Ukrainian border.

Naftogaz acting board chairman Roman Chumak said: “This supply further strengthens the energy partnership between our companies and supports the delivery of a reliable resource to Ukrainian consumers.

“As we prepare for the next heating season, such contracts remain a key element of our strategy to diversify supply and bolster the country’s energy resilience.”

In September, Orlen strengthened its LNG supply chain throughout central and eastern Europe by securing an exclusive five-year contract with KN Energies of Lithuania.

The deal provides Orlen with exclusive rights to utilise a small-scale LNG reloading station at the port of Klaipėda, thereby bolstering its gas distribution network in north-eastern Poland and the Baltic area.
